이상한 나라의 엘리스 / 체셔 고양이 / '넌 분명 미쳤어. 미치지 않았다면 여기까지 올 리가 없거든.' / Alice in Wonderland / Cheshire Cat / 'You must be, or you wouldn't have come here.'

  그때 앨리스는 조금 떨어져 있는 나뭇가지 위에 체셔 고양이가 앉아 있는 것을 보고 깜짝 놀랐다.
  고양이는 앨리스를 쳐다보며 웃고 있었다.

  순해 보이기는 했지만 기다란 발톱에 날카로운 이빨을 보자 섣불리 대하면 안 되겠다는 생각이 들었다.
 

  '고양이야!'

  앨리스는 고양이가 좋아할지 어떨지 몰라 조심스럽게 말을 건넸다. 

  하지만 고양이는 좀 더 크게 미소를 지어 보일 뿐이었다.

 

  ‘그래, 아직까지는 기분이 좋은 모양이야.’

 

  라고 생각한 앨리스는 계속 말을 이었다.

  '내가 여기서 어느 길로 가야 하는지 가르쳐 줄래?'

  '그건 네가 어디로 가고 싶은 건지에 달렸어.'

  고양이가 대답했다.

  '난 어디라도 상관없는데…….'

  앨리스가 말했다.

  '그럼 어디로든 가면 되지.'

 

  고양이가 대꾸했다.

 

  '그러니까 어디든 도착하기만 한다면…….'

 

  앨리스가 설명을 덧붙였다.

 

  '그럼, 분명 어딘가에 도착할 수 있을 거야.'

 

  고양이가 말했다.

 

  '충분히 오래 걷다 보면' 

  틀린 말은 아니었다.

  앨리스는 다른 질문을 던졌다.

  '그곳에는 누가 살고 있니?'

 

  '저쪽에는'

  고양이가 오른발을 치켜들며 말했다.

  '모자 장수가 살고…….저쪽에는'

  이번에는 왼쪽 발을 치켜들며 말했다.

  '3월 토끼가 살아. 어차피 둘 다 미쳤으니 마음에 드는 쪽으로 들러 봐.'

  '하지만 난 미친 사람들에게는 가기 싫어.'

  앨리스가 말했다.

  '나도 그건 어쩔 수 없어.' 

 

  고양이가 말했다.

 

  '여기 있는 사람들은 다 미쳤으니까. 나도 미쳤고, 너도 미쳤고.'

  '내가 미친 건 네가 어떻게 알아?'

  앨리스가 물었다.

  '넌 분명 미쳤어.

 

  고양이가 말했다.

 

  '미치지 않았다면 여기까지 올 리가 없거든.'

 

 

  When she was a little startled by seeing the Cheshire Cat sitting on a bough of a tree a few yards off. 

  The Cat only grinned when it saw Alice.

  It looked good-natured, she thought: still it had very long claws and a great many teeth, so she felt that it ought to be treated with respect.

  'Cheshire Puss,'

 

  she began, rather timidly, as she did not at all know whether it would like the name:

  however, it only grinned a little wider.  

 

  'Come, it's pleased so far,'

 

  thought Alice, and she went on.

 

  'Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?'

  'That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,'

 

  said the Cat.

  'I don't much care where?'

 

  said Alice.

  'Then it doesn't matter which way you go,'

 

  said the Cat.

  '-so long as I get somewhere,'

 

  Alice added as an explanation.

  'Oh, you're sure to do that,'

 

  said the Cat,

 

  'if you only walk long enough.' 

 

  Alice felt that this could not be denied,

  so she tried another question.

 

  'What sort of people live about here?'

  'In that direction,'

 

  the Cat said, waving its right paw round,

 

  'lives a Hatter: and in that direction,'

 

  waving the other paw,

 

  'lives a March Hare. Visit either you like: they're both mad.' 

 

  'But I don't want to go among mad people,'

 

  Alice remarked.

  'Oh, you can't help that,'

 

  said the Cat:

 

  'we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.'

  'How do you know I'm mad?'

 

  said Alice.

  'You must be,'

 

  said the Cat,

 

  'or you wouldn't have come here.' '
